
Ares is one of the Greek gods, and he is the first son of Zeus and Hera. He is not particularly favored by his parents or any of the other gods, though his most consistent lover is Aphrodite. The god is often associated to violence in all its ugly forms and with war. He is the god of blood, violence, indiscriminate killing, and the destruction of life.
Ares was a god of war
Ares was the war god of ancient Greece. He represented the most barbaric and violent aspects of war. He was also the brother of Athena, the goddess of honor and goodwill. Although Ares was considered the god war, the Greeks believed he could help individuals in their own battles.

He was a bloodthirsty warrior
Ares, god of war was a bloodthirsty madman who thrived off destruction. From around 1200 BC, the Greeks worshipped him. He was originally from Thrace and his people were feared. Ares' bloodthirsty nature made him a difficult god to worship and led to many defeats in battle. He also was often put into a pot by giants, and was a frequent victim of Athena's revenge.
He was the symbol for indiscriminate slaughter
Ares was the Greek god of war. He was often depicted in mythology by the man who pierces shields and sacks cities. He represented the violent side in battle and was different from Athena, which represents a more strategic war. Ares was a powerful god. He was often pictured alongside his brothers Phobos (and Deimos) and with his sister Eris. His symbols are a blade and spear. He is also associated on the boar, with the vulture, as well as dead carcasses.

Athena, Ares and the sea that thundered in the background fought and fell upon each other. Under their immortal feet, the earth creaked beneath them. Their battle-cries rose across the sky, from the high heavens to Hades’ abyss to the lowlands. Both gods, and men, shrieked in pain.
Spartan warriors revered him.
The mighty Spartan army was the center of Spartan life. At seven years old, boys went to war. There was no other profession or education for them. The god Ares, the Spartan god of values, was worshipped by the Spartans. They placed a statue with chains of the god in the city.

He is the Roman god Mars' ancestor
Ares is the ancestor the god Mars. He was the father of the founders Romulus (Rome), and Remus. The gods hated Ares but Aphrodite loved him. Aphrodite preferred handsome Ares even though she was married with the mortal god Hephaestus.
