Indonesian culture consists of a mix of religions. Most of central Java is Muslim. It is possible to find Islamic and Christian universities right next to each other. You will also find Hindu temples, like Borobudur which draw large crowds of tourists. The Indonesian family has strong traditions.

Islam

Islam is Indonesia's most dominant religion. Indonesian Muslims are predominantly Sunni. There is approximately 3% Shia Muslims based in Jakarta. There are also 400,000 Ahmadi Muslims, a small minority of 0.2%. Although 85% of Indonesians practice Islam, Indonesia is not a secular Islamic state. The country's Constitution recognizes only six officially recognized religions. Most Indonesians are more attached to their nationality than their religious beliefs.

Gamelan

Gamelan is the name for an Indonesian orchestra that plays traditional music. It is primarily composed of percussion instruments, but sometimes also includes wind instruments, string instruments, and voices. The ensemble also includes dancers. This ritual involves sitting in circle and eating together. The Indonesian tradition of this ritual dates back centuries and is still practiced today.

One of the most popular traditional games in Indonesia is called Gobak Sodor. It is a team sport that involves players drawing boxes on the ground and walking from one box with one foot. Galah Asin may also be known for this game. It is still played in various ceremonies in Indonesia today.
