Believing in multiple gods can have many benefits. This type of religion avoids many problems associated with monotheism, such as omnipresence and evil. People who practice polytheism have a lower tolerance for other gods. Both of these issues can be avoided by practicing polytheism better than monotheism.
Monotheism
Monotheistic Christianity emphasizes God's singularity. The religion of Israel, which started with the Mosaic texts, was monotheistic from the start. From multiple gods believed in, the concept of one God was born.
Polytheism
Polytheism, or believing in many gods, is a religious practice where believers worship several gods. Although polytheism is sometimes confused with paganism it is a distinct category. Polytheistic religions may worship all gods equally while others place gods according to hierarchical order. Each one of these gods has different powers and may not be able to grant all the followers' desires.
Henotheism
Henotheism, also known as polytheism, is a belief that many gods exist. Although henotheists believe in one primary deity, they don't deny that other deities exist. The Greek words 'heise', meaning one, and 'theos, meaning God are the origins of the term henotheism. Henotheism is different from monotheism because belief in multiple gods is a choice rather than a religious obligation.
Pantheism
Pantheism is a philosophy which believes in multiple gods. Pantheism places an emphasis on science and inquiry. It believes that understanding the universe will lead to the understanding God. This philosophy does NOT require any belief in the afterlife or strict rituals. This philosophy is common among many non-Christian religions.
Animism
Animism can be described as a belief that many gods or spirits are involved in the lives of people. Animists believe in the interconnectedness of everything, including humans, animals, and the elements. They believe everything is spiritual, but not all spirits have the same characteristics. Pantheists believe in one universal spiritual essence. But animists believe there are many spirits within each thing, each with its own unique personality. Animists regard themselves as part and parcel of nature, equal to other forces.
Plant deities
Aztecs worshipped plant goddesses such as Mayahuel who is the goddess of the maguey. This plant's sap is considered to be the blood of the deity. Centzon Totochtin refers to her feeding 400 rabbits.
Polytheistic rulers
Polytheism cannot be described as a single system. It is a flexible framework that articulates local cults within regional and supraregional contexts. Contrary to monotheism which has a fixed set gods, polytheism doesn't have one. In fact, scholars have tended to reject the idea that polytheism is an evolutionary stage, as they argue that multiple gods were indicative of an imbalance in cultural thought.
Monotheistic religions
Monotheistic religions believe in multiple gods. Often, they believe in many more than one. A majority of the world's population believes in one or more religions. Some of these religions have very similar beliefs about God, while others differ in some ways. These three monotheistic religions are Christianity and Islam.
