Greek Mythology

polytheism religion

Greek mythology is an ancient form of literature. The stories of the gods are often infused with human qualities and feelings, and are often portrayed with a distinctly human quality. These stories often feature heroes who are human beings and mortal parents who bridge the gap between the gods' and man's worlds.

Homer

Homer is one mythological figure that is most popular in Greece. He was a blind poet who wrote the Iliad, Odyssey, and epics. We know little about him or his background, even though his works are considered to be the best of Greek literature. His stories are all based upon hypothetical events. He had no known descendants.

Homer's poetic style is very different from that of other canonical poets. His poetry is distinguished by its simplicity, rapidity, and clear language. His use of the dactylic Hexameter, which is a metrical foot that consists of one stressed syllable and two unstressed ones, probably accounts for his rapid writing. Homer's epics sound like they were written by a master story-teller.

Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey, contains a number of historical events. These events have been the subject of many commentaries. Homer’s poems are still part and parcel of Greek education.

Socrates

Athenians fought to preserve their past glory and ideas of wealth and beauty during the time of Socrates. Socrates questioned these ideas and stressed that the mind is important. Although many Athenians loved Socrates's refusal to accept the accepted wisdom of the time, others hated his actions and were more angry. Socrates was ultimately convicted of impiety and corruption in the youth at Athens. He chose to defend himself in court.

Plato's time saw a different story than the one attributed to Xenophon. Xenophon is a military leader who sought to emphasize the traits of a good statesman. He presented Socrates, a man who held knowledge of himself and ignorance in high esteem, as Xenophon.
