Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was born February 4, 1906 in Breslau in Germany. He became active in the Protestant ecumenical movement and studied at the University of Berlin. While studying there, he became interested in racial injustice and made many contacts that were important to the Confessing Church after 1933. He also played an important role in the German resistance during World War II.

The Crusades

Crusades, which were campaigns of faith in which Church fought against its values and which aimed at reclaiming lost Christian territories, were called the Crusades. The First Crusade was launched by Pope Urban II in 1095 from a central French town. He declared that a pilgrimage in Jerusalem would satisfy all penances. This appeal was both innovative and modern, as Christians were already fighting Muslims in faraway lands like the Iberian peninsula or Sicily. The Church was also offering only limited spiritual rewards.

The Protestant Reformation

The Protestant Reformation refers to a time in Christian history where there was a major shift in church structure. The Reformation allowed the Bible to be more easily accessible, and freed them from the Roman Catholic church's demands. Protestantism also banned the practice of paying money to God in exchange for salvation. It stated that Jesus is the only way to salvation and that he died for our sins.

The Crucifixion

The crucifixion in Christian history was a horrific act of violence. Jesus was mocked by Roman soldiers for his claim to be King of the Jews and was scourged. The Temple's high council wanted to kill Jesus but needed Rome's approval to do so. Pontius Pilate the Roman Governor found Jesus guilty in treason, and sentenced Him to Death. Pilate proposed that he be flogged instead, but the crowd insisted that Jesus be executed.
