Haugbui refers to a ghost or spirit that returns to haunt the living. The term haugbui could also be used to refer to a demonic being. These spirits are typically associated with the deceased and protect burial areas. They can also be portrayed as a powerful demon who seeks to prolong life. Haugbui are also guardians of ritual objects.
Haugbui, although often associated with vampires is not a unique term. The Haugbui is also associated to Bjorn, a character from Hrolfs. He is a cave bear. He is said also to have the ability to control a bear’s mind.
Uppsala temple
Adam mentions Uppsala's Norse sacred temple and the sacred grove nearby. However, he does not mention the exact form of the temple or the rituals performed there. He mentions Odin statues, Thor, Freyr and an open air sanctuary, where officiants could draw from elemental power.
Adam's account is the most comprehensive yet, but the details of the Norse cult remain disputed. The archaeological evidence for Uppsala is steadily growing over the past three decades.
