Freedom of religion goes beyond the right to worship
Religious freedom has multiple aspects and is more than a right to worship. It involves freedom to practice any religion, regardless of the government's official policy. The Supreme Court pointed out that freedom is not limited to individual beliefs. It can also include religious relationships.
It is a collective property right
While freedom of religion is a fundamental individual right, it also has a collective dimension. The Supreme Court has noted that freedom of religion encompasses the beliefs and practices of an individual as well as the relationships among individuals. A mandatory covenant was placed on students in a case involving Trinity Western University that prohibited any sexual relationship other than marriage. The court found that the refusal of Trinity Western University to accredit its law school on the basis of this covenant violated s. 2(a), Charter because it limited the community’s ability to engage spiritual development.
Religious beliefs are not protected.
Free expression of religious beliefs is protected by the First Amendment, but the government may not force individuals to express their beliefs. The government cannot coerce individuals into practicing a particular belief or practice through law. This is except when it is unreasonable. A criminal law cannot force an individual to engage in religious practices that are contrary to the dogma or beliefs of a particular religion.
It is a human Right
Freedom of religion is a human right that should not be restricted. Religious differences can be a source of conflict. It is possible to prevent conflict by encouraging respect among religious groups. Furthermore, discrimination against religions can cause economic and social problems. It is impossible for a country to grow without excluding minorities. Societies can only be stronger when all members feel respected.
